Petrographic thin sections are slices of rock (in this case, meteorites and impactites) mounted to glass microscope slides and ground and polished to 0.03 to 0.05 mm thick. These can be examined at magnifications of from 1X to 100X to determine what minerals they contain.
Many of the photos in this set are animations made by rotating polarized filters between successive images in the animation.
