위의 그림은 셰익스피어 Shakespear 의 비극 "햄릿 Hamlet"에 나오는 비극적인 삶을 산 오필리아를 그린 것입니다.

순수한 오필리아는 왕자 햄릿이 선왕의 복수를 위해 광기를 가장한 것을 보고 자신이 사랑하는 햄릿이 정말로 미쳤다고 생각하고 절망에 빠지죠. 그리고 나중에 햄릿이 그녀의 아버지 폴로니어스를 죽이자 그만 자신이 미쳐버리게 됩니다.

오필리아가 상처받아 광기들린 순수의 상징이라 하는데, 오늘날에도 오필리아와 같은 사람이 있을까요?

그녀의 죽음은 "햄릿"에서 그녀의 오빠 레어티즈에게 말하는 거투르드 왕비의 대사를 통해 마치 시처럼 표현되어 있습니다.

그애는 꽃으로 만든 관을 늘어진 버드나무 가지에 걸려고 기어오르다,
심술궂은 가지가 부러져 화환과 함께 흐느끼는 시냇물 속으로 떨어지고 말았다.

옷이 활짝 펴져서 잠시 인어처럼 물에 떠있는 동안
그애는 자신의 불행을 모르는 사람처럼,
아니면 본래 물 속에 태어나고 자란 존재처럼
옛 찬송가 몇 절을 불렀다는구나.

그러나 오래지 않아 물에 젖어 무거워진 옷은
그 가엾은 것을 아름다운 노래에서
진흙탕의 죽음으로 끌어들이고 말았다.

There on the pendant boughs her crownet weeds
Clambring to hang, an envious sliver broke,
When down her weedy trophies and herself
Fell in the weeping brook.

Her clothes spread wide,
And mermaid-like a while they bore her up;
Which time she chanted snatches of old lauds,
As one incapable of her own distress,
Or like a creature native and induedUnto that element.

But long it could not be
Till that her garments, heavy with their drink,
Pulled the poor wretch from her melodious lay
To muddy death.
